Danger signs for President Obama with Black voters

Posted by PMac On August - 4 - 2011 1 COMMENT

(New America Media)

By Earl Ofari Hutchinson

Synopsis: The jobless rate has hit crisis levels in many inner city communities, and the perception is that the President simply isn’t doing enough to combat the crisis.

In quick succession, two brightly lit danger signs burst on President Obama’s reelection road. The first was the recent Washington Post/ABC poll showing that nearly as many African-Americans say they are displeased with Obama’s performance as those who approve. The prime reason for the discontent is jobs, or lack thereof, in black communities.

The jobless rate has hit crisis levels in many inner-city communities, and the perception is that the president simply isn’t saying and doing enough to combat the crisis.

The criticism is not fair given the absolute refusal of congressional Republicans and more than a few Democrats to kick out another penny for job stimulus and training programs. He has also had to beat back every effort by the same forces determined to hack, slash, and vaporize any spending on education and infrastructure spending. Nonetheless, the perception is still that Obama hasn’t done enough on the black-jobs front, and that hurts.

The second danger sign is that Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver, co-chair of he Congressional Black Caucus, flatly called the debt ceiling deal “a sugar coated Satan sandwich.”

Caucus members of been displeased with the president’s compromise and conciliation with the GOP to get a debt ceiling deal. But the comments by Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat, raised the inevitable question of whether there is a deeper meaning — that many black legislative officials are hearing the grumbles and feeling the heat from more blacks about Obama’s perceived failure to take more aggressive action to deal with black needs?

The Caucus has straddled the fine line between extreme care not to say and do anything that will give any more ammunition to Obama’s sworn enemies to attack him on policy questions. Certainly, they have not wanted to feed any public impression that their support (and that of black voters for Obama) has in any way diminished.

But the other side of that fine line is the crisis of black joblessness, compounded by an exploding wealth gap between black and white households that is as high as it’s been in modern times.

The expectation driven by mounting desperation is that Obama must take off the wraps and mount a frontal assault on the problems of the black poor.

But that bumps squarely up against the political reality that the GOP, Congress, and a divided Democratic Party has severely restricted his already tightly constricted political maneuverability. Those constraints have come just when he had to jump start new initiatives and programs to tackle the jobless plight of black males and the disproportionate number of blacks in home foreclosure, as well as spend more to combat failing inner-city public schools, curtail black homelessness and push criminal-justice reform.

The criticisms of Obama’s perceived failings have hit the mark with some blacks.

But criticism means little when no matter how badly some blacks think Obama has performed in confronting urban problems — and for being too willing to make nice with the GOP — they forget to consider this question: If not Obama, who?

It’s beyond absurd to even suggest any of the pack of GOP presidential contenders as any kind of alternative to Obama. For the past half-century, blacks have given every Democratic presidential candidate and president an unflagging 80 to 90 percent of their vote. This will not change in 2012, whether Obama is the Democrat presidential contender or not.

Even if some blacks, out of frustration or dislike for Obama, were tempted to look elsewhere, the GOP contenders have made it clear in word and deed they will mount a full assault on every program and initiative on health care, education, infrastructure investment and federal spending on job creation.

Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, as well as education, labor and civil rights protections will also be under attack. Few black voters are prepared to commit political suicide to back anyone that will do that.

The fall off in Obama’s approval ratings among some black voters is no surprise. The expectation that Obama could whipsaw a GOP that has dug in its heels and opposed any and every program and initiative on Obama’s legislative table — not to mention for him to wage an open sustained battle for black needs — was always a fantasy.

But it’s no fantasy that despite the danger signs in the criticisms and disappointment of many blacks, Obama is the only thing that stands between the GOP and their total economic and political ruin.

Tony Blair to attend Beyond Sport Summit 2011 in Cape Town

Beyond Sport announced that former British Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Beyond Sport Ambassadors Tony Blair will be attending the Beyond Sport Summit 2011, taking place in Cape Town, South Africa from 5th-8th December.

At the third annual gathering of its kind, the former British Prime Minister will join an array of high-profile leaders from international sports federations, corporate companies, global aid organisations, and social philanthropy at the Summit, helping to build on the continuing evolution of the Beyond Sport network and its mission to celebrate and support the use of sport as a vehicle for positive social change.

In office Tony Blair was a consistent advocate for the positive role sport can play in public policy and played a leading role in the UK’s bid for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since leaving Downing Street, he has also launched the Tony Blair Sports Foundation, which will increase participation in sport by young people, particularly those who are currently socially excluded – by enabling more adults to become trained coaches and by helping to match coaches with the schools and sports clubs which need them.

Commented Mr. Blair: “No country has seen the immense power of sport and its ability to bind people together more than the Rainbow Nation – from the Springboks in 1995 to the Vuvuzelas in 2010. This global gathering in Cape Town takes Beyond Sport to the very heart of sport and development and we are absolutely delighted to have Archbishop Desmond Tutu as our Patron. The work Beyond Sport does in bringing together the people at the forefront of this movement not only highlights the substantial benefits of such initiatives and the transformative influence they can have but also encourages others to act. I’m really looking forward to meeting many of these remarkable individuals at the Summit in December.”

Archbishop Tutu, Official Patron: “I’ve witnessed first-hand the power sport can have on communities and to see so many people in one room talking about they can use this power for good was a humbling moment. Beyond Sport can achieve great things.”

Nick Keller, Founder of Beyond Sport: “The passionate advocacy of our Chairman Tony Blair and our Patron Archbishop Desmond Tutu demonstrates that the most experienced of world statesmen recognise the significant role sport has to play in vital development issues.”

The Beyond Sport Ambassadors bring their unique experiences and visions to the Beyond Sport initiative and offer their input during the final judging process for the Beyond Sport Awards which provides a package of business support to projects across the world that use sport to address issues within their communities. Ambassdors include the multi-Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson and Dame Kelly Holmes; Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of London 2012; Lucas Radebe, former Bafana Bafana Captain; and two-time Women’s World Cup winner and former president of the Women’s Sport Foundation, Julie Foudy.

Lucas Radebe, Beyond Sport Ambassador: “Growing up in Soweto, I witnessed first-hand how effective sport can be in making a difference in young people’s lives. I have now seen the impact sport can have on a global scale. As a Beyond Sport Ambassador, I have attended the global Summits in London and in Chicago, and am extremely thrilled to again be a part of this inspirational gathering, this time in my home country, when Beyond Sport comes to Cape Town in December.”

Dame Kelly Holmes, Beyond Sport Ambassador: ‘Beyond Sport makes heroes of individuals, organizations and projects that use sport to really make a difference to people’s lives. I am absolutely delighted to have been part of the global initiative from the beginning and very proud to be an Ambassador.’

The four days of the Summit 2011 will use a unique combination of networking opportunities, insightful panels, and action-led working sessions to collide those who use sport as a vehicle to create social impact, with influencers from the world of business, government and federations whose attitudes and decisions can have substantial impact.
Once again representatives from all of the shortlisted Beyond Sport Awards 2011 projects across the world will be brought to the Summit in Cape Town to share their insights and best practices from the front line of the sport and development.
Having celebrated the best sport and development projects from across the world in 2009 and 2010, the Beyond Sport Awards 2011 opened for entries once again in January this year with the winners to be announced at the Summit in December. The Awards Shortlist was unveiled in early June, selected from close to 400 projects covering more than 150 countries.

Further announcements on speakers and panellists as well as details on how to attend the third Beyond Sport Summit will be made in the coming weeks and months. Those wishing to attend can register their place at www.beyondsport.org.

Former Northwest Suburban Township official charged in “Operation Cookie Jar” pleads guilty

Posted by PMac On August - 4 - 2011 1 COMMENT

Funds intended for needy families stolen to pay personal bills  and daughter’s “Sweet 16” birthday party

The former welfare director of a northwest suburban government township charged in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s ongoing crackdown on local public corruption has pled guilty, State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced.

Aurea Picasso, 45, formerly of Aurora, pled guilty to one count of theft of government funds over $100,000 and was sentenced to six years in prison during a court appearance.

According to prosecutors, Picasso served as Welfare Director for Hanover Township from 2003 until 2009. This department was responsible for providing welfare checks to the needy and also ran a food pantry to provide additional assistance.

While serving as director, the defendant had access the township’s checkbooks as well as an additional checking account provided by the Salvation Army for emergency situations. Picasso is alleged to have written $124,560 in checks from these accounts to pay for dental work, car insurance, cell phones, and expenses for her daughter’s ‘Sweet 16’ birthday party.

Picasso is also accused of enrolling family, friends, and others for welfare benefits through the Township, and when these checks were processed by the Township, Picasso would forge the signatures and deposit the funds in her bank account, allowing her to steal an additional $68,550.

“This defendant’s theft of funds to help families who needed food or welfare assistance brought corruption to a new low in Cook County,” Alvarez said. “This conviction shows we are serious about holding those accountable who use taxpayer funds for their own personal ATM machines.”

In 2009, a new administration took over in Hanover Township and officials became suspicious that funds had been diverted.  Township officials contacted the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Public Corruption and Financial Crimes unit and an investigation was initiated.  All told, Picasso is alleged to have stolen $193,110 in township funds.

In October of 2010, Picasso was arrested a day before she was scheduled to be released on parole from Dwight Correctional Facility where she has been serving a prison sentence for an unrelated identity theft case. Today Picasso pled guilty before Judge Vincent Gaughan who sentenced her to six years in prison.

State’s Attorney Alvarez thanked Hanover Township officials for their cooperation and assistance in the investigation.

The charges are part of “Operation Cookie Jar,” the State’s Attorney’s ongoing investigative operation targeting public or government employees accused of corruption at the local level. Since Anita Alvarez took office in December of 2008, her Special Prosecutions Bureau has prosecuted more than 50 defendants for public corruption offenses, including ‘Cookie Jar’ which has focused on public employees, union officials, and government contractors. To date, seven of the ‘Cookie Jar’ defendants have pled guilty, with three of them receiving six-year prison sentences.

Black pro-life organization distributes 3,000 “MAAFA21″ DVDs at NAACP convention in Los Angeles

”MAAFA 21″, produced by Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamic, chronicles the history of abortion in America and the deliberate and systematic targeting of the African American community. The film also highlights the racist agenda of Planned Parenthood

Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com) — The Life Education and Resource Network (LEARN), northeast Director Rev. Clenard H. Childress Jr and a team of 17 activists traveled across the nation to distribute 3,000 copies of the eye opening documentary MAAFA 21 to attendees of this year’s NAACP National Convention held at the convention center in downtown Los Angeles, California.

MAAFA 21 is a dynamic production produced by Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamics. It chronicles the history of abortion in America and the deliberate and systematic targeting of the African American community. The film also highlights the racist agenda of Planned Parenthood.

MAAFA 21 is a tremendous tool for social activist to use in the Black Community. It empirically documents Black Genocide in America,” stated Rev Childress. “The seeds that were sown in these last four days is going to bring a harvest of witnesses and advocates to proclaim the truth about Black Genocide.”

Childress is also the founder of the website BlackGenocide.org. The team of activists that traveled with him to distribute the videos attend his church in Montclair, New Jersey and like himself desires to see the end of abortion.

“I am surprised that there was so much opposition to us from security,” stated Sasha Dalger. “We were giving things away and there were those who were selling things and soliciting signatures for political organizations who virtually went unopposed.”

Bro Malik Wright agreed with Sasha’s comment, “Yeah it was like they were looking just for us. One security guard even tried to confiscate our DVDs. You would think we were giving out pornographic videos.”

The NAACP Convention has still refused to address the issue of abortion which has killed over 20 million African Americans to date and is decimating the Black community at the rate of 1,786 a day. 52% of all African American pregnancies end in abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute which is the research arm for Planned Parenthood. In New York City, for instance, for every 1,000 African American’s born 1,625 are killed by abortion.

In his opening address the President of the NAACP, Todd Jealous, stated, “The NAACP’s task in the 21st century is to turn racial equality into racial justice.” Rev Childress comments, “If that is the agenda of the NAACP, then we have helped the mission along by handing out MAAFA 21 which exposes racial prejudice and Black Genocide in the 21st century. 3,000 members should be now paving the way to end racial injustice.”

The 3,000th DVD of MAAFA 21 was handed to a delegate at the convention who promised to contact LEARN to let them know what she thought of the documentary. The delegate was asked where she was from and she yelled out Denver, Colorado.

LEARN team member Anton Tucker said, “I believe we have come full circle in some way, I truly believe something significant has happened here this week. We hand out 2,999 and the last one goes to where it all started, Denver!”
