PETAL et al.’s  Free video training workshops a resounding success; participants learned the basic essentials of designing and developing a video game.

Juanita Bratcher

South Holland, IL – Juanita Bratcher, Editor & Publisher of CopyLine Magazine, Author, Poet & Songwriter, shared her expertise in Script Writing to participants at PETAL et al.’s Video Game Design & Development workshops at the South Holland Library in South Holland, Illinois. Bratcher will also teach Script Writing at PETAL et al’s upcoming Training Sessions at Chicago’s Avalon Library, 8148 S. Stony Island Ave., Chicago, IL, on October 22nd and 29th.

Bratcher said PETAL et al. ’s efforts to offer free video game workshops to teach participants about the multi-billion-dollar industry should be commended. ”Just seeing the eagerness and the interest on the part of those participating in the workshops was amazing,” Bratcher said. “And to get this training for free makes it all worthwhile. Hopefully, some Foundations will step in and help PETAL et al. in its efforts to reach out to minorities in helping to develop their career goals and bring more diversity to the video game industry.”

PETAL et al., a not-for-profit company, offers the free video game training workshops to develop and enhance the skills of those persons interested in working in the video game industry.

According to Pamela McMillan, President & CEO of PETAL et al.,  ”minorities are grossly under-represented in the video game and mobile applications industry. There is a lack of diversity in the industry and we’re missing out on diversity.”

Concerned about a lack of diversity in the multi-billion-dollar video game and mobile applications industry, McMillan, through PETAL et al., is making steps to train minorities about the industry through exploratory and training workshops.

writers work shop Juanita BratcherDuring the training sessions, McMillan teaches Introduction to Video Game Design & Development, and Clarence McMillan, PETAL et al.’s Chief Technology Officer, teaches Conceptual Art and Story Boarding. Others teaching in the sessions are: Nitin Khare, Michele McMillan and Anand Rao, some of the top Programmers in Chicago, who will share their expertise with participants; Samuel Piazza, Musician & Sound Engineer, will discuss music and sound effects for video games.

Pamela McMillan emphasized the need to raise minorities’ awareness about developments in the video game and mobile applications industry. She said video games and apps are not just for entertainment but also educational.

Clarence McMillan said the Video Game Design & Development Workshops sponsored by PETAL et al. focuses on and introduces technology behind many of today’s video games to users of this medium that are under-represented in its making and creation.

About PETAL et al.

PETAL et al. is a non-profit organization, the first of its kind that provides skills development and leadership training to the underprivileged and underrepresented in the entertainment technology arts industry where only a disproportionate number of minorities are employed. Our goal is to level the playing field by providing minorities who have career goals and a passionate interest in the field with mentoring services, world class trainers, industry insiders and experts with expertise and track records in the industry.

The mission of PETAL et al., is to provide training, mentorship and leadership skills to “level the playing field” for minorities in the Video Game and Mobile Applications industry. Our focus is on job skills development, portfolio enhancement and networking to help resolve the low representation of the underrepresented and underprivileged in the field and increase their potential for employment in the industry by creating bridges. We will do this by working with industry leaders, educators, organizations and corporations for the development of programs to make jobs in the industry tangible.

The vision of PETAL et al. and its founder is to inspire entertainment technology artists to push creativity, passion and their skills to the limit whereas prospective employers keep an eye out for talent coming out of the program.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) showcases the history, art and the cultural richness that resulted from the dispersal of Africans throughout the African Diaspora through innovative and engaging exhibitions, education and public programs.  By realizing its mission MoAD connects all people through our shared African heritage.  Incorporated in 2002 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, MoAD opened its doors in 2005 in 20,000 sq. ft. of space contiguous with the St. Regis Hotel and Residences and in the historic Williams Building at 685 Mission Street at Third.  MoAD was conceived as a cornerstone of the economic and cultural revitalization of downtown San Francisco and has become an anchor with its neighbors the San Francisco MoMA, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Zeum, and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in making this dynamic cultural corridor a premier cultural destination.

Chicago Park District to Waives Field Fees for Community Youth Groups

The Chicago Park District will be joined by hundreds of Chicago-area children, a consortium of public-private donors and elected officials to celebrate the Grand Openings of three new artificial turf athletic fields Saturday, Oct. 15.

The “Take the Field” initiative joins public and private resources to build 10 artificial turf athletic fields throughout the City of Chicago, three of which open on Saturday.  Partners for those include the Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation, Allstate (Humboldt Park), Finnegan Family/Teach for America (Cornell Square Park) and Bears Care (Jackson Park).  The celebrations will include soccer clinics hosted by the Urban Initiatives soccer program at Humboldt and Cornell Square Parks, and scrimmage flag football games coached by Chicago Bears players at Jackson Park Field.

The Grand Openings will take place at the following times and locations:

* 12:30 p.m.     Humboldt Park, Allstate Field, 1400 N. Sacramento Ave.

    (Supported by Allstate)

*         1:45 p.m. Cornell Square Park, Teach for America Field, 1809 W. 50th St.

        (Supported the Finnegan Family)

*   3 p.m. Jackson Park Field, Jackson Park Field, 6401 S. Stony Island Ave. (Supported by Bears Care

Over the next three years “Take the Field” will result in the construction of 10 public artificial turf athletic fields located in underserved and geographically diverse Chicago parks.  Supported through private and foundation funds, the initiative will enable all fields to be built privately.  Recognizing the importance of these fields to local communities, the Chicago Park District will waive permit fees for during specific times throughout the week for youth and community groups that meet eligibility requirements.

Each athletic field will feature an all-weather surface and lighting that will allow the field to be used 9 months out of the year.  At least three of the fields will be lined for both soccer and football.

The Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation has committed to donate up to $5 million on a 1:1 matching basis. To date, $7.9 million has been dedicated to the program thanks to its partners.

In addition to those opening Saturday, design and construction is underway at Garfield Park, 100 N. Central Park Ave. (Sacks Field, supported by the Sacks Family); La Follette Park, 1333 N. Laramie Ave. (LaFollette Park Field, supported by Bears Care and the Parkways Foundation); and Pasteur Park, 5825 S. Kostner Ave. (Chicago Fire Soccer Club Field, supported by Chicago Fire).

Planning for phase two sites will begin in 2012 and includes Abbott Park, 49 E. 95th St.; Davis Square Park, 4430 S. Marshfield Ave.; Dunbar Park, 300 E. 31st St.; and Rowan Park, 11546 S. Avenue L.
