Thousands of Illinoisans Are Likely to Die Due to Lack of Coverage
if Health Reform Fails to Pass
CHICAGO-SPRINGFIELD – Members of CBHC and its Faith Caucus staged “Die Ins” to introduce Lives On the Line: The Deadly Consequences of Delaying Health Reform, a new Illinois-specific report by Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers.
Key findings from the report include:
- In the 15-year period since our nation last debated health reform (1995-2009), more than 294,000 American adults (25-64 years old) died prematurely due to a lack of health coverage. This is more than the number of American soliders that died in battle during World War II.
- Every day in 2010, approximately 68 non-elderly adult Americans died prematurely due to lack of health coverage. If health reform fails, that number will reach 84 Americans every day by 2019.
- Illinois ranks sixth of all states in premature deaths due to a lack of coverage over the 15-year period 1995-2009, with 10,800 Illinoisans dead simply because they had no health coverage.
- 9,400 Illinoisans are projected to die prematurely over the next ten years, ranking Illinois at seventh in the nation for premature deaths due to a lack of health coverage.
“The fact that tens of thousands of people die every year for lack of needed health care in the richest nation in the world is beyond any moral sensibility,” stated Rev. Larry Greenfield, Executive Minister, American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago. “The values we share as people of faith call us to a more compassionate and just reality. We have a moral imperative to make health care reform happen this year,” said Sh. Kifah Mustafa of the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview.
After a year of deliberation and debate, the United States Congress is on the verge of passing historic health reform legislation. Unfortunately, while deliberations continue, millions of people continue to suffer the consequences of being uninsured. Illinois has the seventh largest projected number of premature deaths due to a lack of coverage over the next 10 years. Thousands of Illinoisans are likely to die due to lack of coverage if health reform fails to pass.
“The Faith Caucus urges Congress to complete the critical task at hand on behalf of the millions who are left out and left behind in our current health care system,” said Jane Ramsey, Executive Director, Jewish Council on Urban Affairs.
The Institute of Medicine reported that, in the year 2000, more than 18,000 adults nationwide died because they did not have health insurance. The Urban Institute updated that estimate and reported that approximately 22,000 adults died in 2006 due to a lack of health insurance. The Families USA report is based on the methodologies and data from these studies.
“We laid down the ground work with the Illinois Health Care Justice Act. Now is the time for Congress to act, and then the Campaign for Better Health Care and I will work to implement the legislation for accessible, quality, and affordable health care.” said Illinois State Senator William Delgado.
“Members of Congress need to know that their delay in passing comprehensive health care reform is impacting the lives of real Americans. It is time they listened to hardworking Americans and not the insurance companies that are more interested in their profits than our health,” said Anthony Stephens of MoveOn.org. Jim Duffett, CBHC Executive Director added, “Americans want Congress to keep moving ahead with health care reform, to GET IT DONE and to get it done right!”
